WHAT?

IMPORTER EXPORTER CODE (IE Code) is a ten digit number granted by Directorate General of Foreign Trade under Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to any bonafide individual or an entity for carrying out import/export.

As per Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act 1992 No person shall make any import or export except under an Importer-exporter Code Number granted by the Director General or the officer authorized by the Director General in this behalf, in accordance with the procedure specified in this behalf by the Director General. Without IE Code a person cannot make any kind of import or export of goods or services to or from any country outside India.

IEC forms the primary document for recognition by the Government of India as an Exporter/Importer. On the basis of IE Code, companies can obtain various benefits on their exports/imports from DGFT, Customs, Export Promotion Council etc.

WHY?
Global Presence
Through IE Code, one can sell their products internationally outside India.
Lifetime Valid
Once an IE Code has been issued it is valid for the lifetime and does not require any renewal.
No compliance
Once IE Code has been issued no further compliance are required to be followed.
Subsidies
An Entity having an IE Code can avail the benefits of various Import / Export subsidies available by the government of India.
WHO?

Any person whether an individual or an entity making any kind of Import / Export of Goods or services has to obtain an IE Code from Directorate General of Foreign Trade before making such Import / Export.

HOW?
  • Step 1: Documentation: - Provide the prescribed documents and information required to be submitted with the DGFT Department for applying for IE Code.
  • Step 2: Application Submit: - Once the documentation is complete, application will be filed with DGFT through Digital Signature of the Applicant and an application fee need to be paid to the government. IEC department may send back your application for correction / change, if required. One need to reply back to the DGFT in 15 days.
  • Step 3: Issue of IE Code: - Once the application is completely verified by the department, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade will allot an IE Code for your business. This IE code comes in soft copy which is actually the PAN of the applicant itself.
